The 1.6-ton HD 8 VV is a small articulated asphalt compactor which offers vibration in both the front and rear drums. VV stands for "Vibration Front, Vibration Rear", with the capability of vibration running in the front drum only, rear drum only, in both drums, or no vibration.

Thus the HD 8 VV offers big-time compactive effort in a small package, equally at home for commercial or roadbuilding applications.

The HD 8 VV is the first Hamm product in the 30 to 35-inch-wide drum size. The HD 8 VV has a drum width of 31.5 inches and a working width of 33.7 inches. It has a HATZ Model 3W35, 3-cylinder, water cooled, S.A.E.-rated 21-horsepower diesel engine, and a very unique "cantilevered" drum suspension system which a single drum support leg on each side of the machine — left leg only on front, right leg only on rear — permits compaction right up against an obstruction such as a wall or curb. This design introduces a permanent 2.2-inch offset to these models.

The HD 8 VV offers hydrostatic dual drum drive, automatic/manual vibration system, hydrostatic articulated steering and excellent maneuverability. Its operator-friendly features include low sound level, an ergonomic, low driver's platform, and modern instrument panel, and three braking systems with an emergency stop button, a plastic water tank serving a pressurized water system, hand-serviceable, plastic spray nozzles, and a fixed 2.2-inch (56mm) offset.
